Music: Kitsuné Premieres Misun "Eli Eli"

Kitsuné

05/16/14 - Buy Kitsuné's latest album.

If there’s one thing Kitsuné’s renowned for, apart from stylish garb, it’s its flair. So being handed the Parisian label’s latest findings out of the talent brewing in the USA today is a proper treat, as Kitsuné AMERICA, the compilation series, never fails to deliver a fresh and innovative selection of offbeat musical snapshots, even by American standards.

The French imprint, instrumental in putting Two Door Cinema Club, Yelle, Hot Chip and numerous others on the map, is conquering the US, picking up the country’s own local artists where it’s buzzin’. After showcasing Childish Gambino, Toro Y Moi, Theophilus London, Haerts and other prestigious artists on previous Kitsuné AMERICA compilations, this 3rd edition keeps on favouring the thinking-outside- the-box generation, with beats and grooves continuing their growing domination and a slower, cooler vibe for sun-drenched days.

America is feeling adventurous, musicians are letting loose, striking combinations of styles and sounds are taking place, and the audience is listening. A perfect time for boss Gildas to invest in new exciting artists: “We believe in those acts and want to help them develop. Our ear is finely-tuned, we know a good tune when we hear one.”

Kitsuné AMERICA 3 is ideal to stream comfy at home or to drive down Route 66 and experience what it’s all about.

Music: Mike Sempert (Of Birds & Batteries) Premieres "Survival"

Mike Sempert

05/05/14 - Buy Mike Sempert's latest album.

Mike Sempert is best known for his work as the songwriter and frontman of the Bay Area band Birds & Batteries.

After years of recording and touring, Sempert decided to take a break from the band to focus on other aspects of life. He got a dog, moved to Los Angeles, and married his longtime love. Inevitably, a new collection of songs came together, many of them centered around these changes and the questions creative people often face as they stare into the oblivion of adulthood.

And so comes Mid Dream, written and recorded in Oakland and Sacramento in the months leading up to Sempert's move to LA. The album is comprised of deeply personal songs presented in high fidelity on both an intimate and epic scale. While Birds & Batteries' albums were on the synthier end of the spectrum, Sempert's new songs called for a more organic treatment - exposed vocals, live drums, acoustic and electric guitars, wurlitzer and rhodes. Some songs are ornamented with flourishes of orchestration, lush background vocals and achey pedal steel guitar, while others are stripped down to the bare essentials. Unobscured by excessive reverb or distortion, Sempert's unique voice and direct lyrics are laid out for all to see, in a humble and bold offering. The clarity of production and songwriting on Mid Dream was influenced by the classic studio music of the 1970s- albums by Gram Parsons, John Lennon, Fleetwood Mac as well as music by Beck, The Shins, Sparklehorse and Cass McCombs and many more. Sempert's voice has been compared to that of Richard Manuel of the Band and Alan Sparhawk of Low.

Birds & Batteries bandmates Colin Fahrner and Jill Heinke were called on to contribute drums and bass respectively, as well as a cast of tremendous musicians from the Oakland music community. Friends and neighbors Blake Henderson (engineering) and Sonya Cotton (vocals) contributed vast intangibles to the album, fostering an environment of warmth and support around the recording process. The result is honest, gentle and striking; there's plenty of sunshine breaking through the fog and sea spray. Mid Dream is his meditation on love and commitment, on art and growing up (or trying to). Mike will be on the road with his band to support the record, so we hope you get a chance to see him make this music live as well.

CRACKER UNPLUGGED Featuring David Lowery and Johnny Hickman

A brief rundown of Cracker’s history: Lowery, in the mid-80s, in Santa Cruz, California, formed Camper Van Beethoven, and their “Take the Skinheads Bowling” became an instant college radio staple. When CVB disbanded on tour in Sweden, following their second major label release, Lowery formed Cracker with his longtime friend Johnny Hickman. (The pair had met on the local music scene as teenagers in Redlands, CA.) Cracker’s emergent sound had less in common with Camper’s exotic excursions and was more in synch with the Kinks and Southern roots music. They released their self-titled debut on Virgin, and following the #1 Modern Rock hit “Teen Angst (What The World Needs Now),” the band became a minor commercial sensation (complete with then-significant MTV exposure). The platinum-selling Kerosene Hat contained the enormous, era-defining hit single “Low,” as well as “Get Off This,” and “Eurotrash Girl.” When the dust settled, Cracker found themselves with an ever-growing, devoted following both in the U.S. (where fans refer to themselves as Crumbs) and throughout Europe. Today the band stays well connected to yet another generation of fans via internet, many of whom were kids when these alt-rock godfathers were first ruling rock radio.

Music: The Trouble With Templeton Premiere Rookie

trouble with templeton maine

05/05/14 - Buy The Trouble With Templeton's latest album.

Bella Union are pleased to announce the debut album from recent signing The Trouble With Templeton, whose Rookie LP will be released May 13th.

Already a huge success in Australia, The Trouble With Templeton is the creation of singer/songwriter Thomas Calder, the 23-year-old who formed the band in 2011. The following year saw TTWT expand to a 5-piece, the new members complimenting Calder’s emotive vocals and songwriting with a collaborative, self-assured sound.

Adventurous, eccentric and stunningly melodic, Rookie is an album that leaves a distinct musical impression. With their debut release The Trouble With Templeton have crafted a record full of warmth and heart, whilst displaying a willingness to make music that’s not afraid to affect or surprise. “The only prerequisite we had going in was that if we loved the song and we believe in it, then we were going to record it,” says Thomas. “The element of surprise is something we really enjoy in music, something we’re always shooting for. You don’t want to know where a song is going from the first two lines.”As a result, the album is a whirling dervish of moods and colours, of tempos and genres, melodies and layers, tackling concepts behind relationships and the way unique human narratives emerge from different viewpoints.

Musically, defining Rookie beyond a happily all-encapsulating idea like ‘intelligent melodic alt-pop’ isn’t worth the hassle. It’s an album that demands listening to in order to be understood. “It’s held together by something undefinable,” reckons Thomas. “For me it’s a whole kaleidoscope of sounds and genres, but there’s something holding it together, and that’s us as a band.”

Before signing to Bella Union, The Trouble With Templeton released the single 'Six Months In A Cast' on the Communion label, the video of which can be viewed HERE.

Rookie will be released May 13th on Bella Union.
