Art: John Whalley Has An Opening This Month
john whalley

10/02/12 - Greenhut Galleries presents John Whalley's World of Wonders from October 4th through the 27th. The Opening Reception is Thursday October 4th from 5-7 PM. John will have an "Artist's Talk" on Saturday, October 6th at 1:30 PM. The gallery hours are  M-F 10-5:30 and Sat. 10-5.

World of Wonders is John Whalley's 4th solo show with Greenhut Galleries.  This body of work continues Whalley's style of exquisitely rendered paintings and drawings.  Advancing the tradition of American realists and acknowledging the Dutch masters, Whalley's works go well beyond mere technique.  His work exudes tremendous warmth, luminosity and charm. He responds to what he calls "the beauty that speaks softly."  Carl Little stated in Art New England, June/July 2008,  "Whalley does not simply reproduce the objects that resonate with him; he transforms them by adding light, enlarging them, or arranging them in particular ways to highlight a particular element.  Whalley need not suffer the anxiety of influence - his work is his own....the viewer gravitates to those images that seem signature - ...Here we pause and admire."

Whalley's work is in numerous private, national and international collections as well as the Georgia Museum of Art, Athens, Georgia; the Otto Naumann Collection, New York, New York and the Alfred Bader Collection, Milwaukee, Wisconsin to name a few.  A 30 year retrospective book of drawings and paintings,  John Whalley - In New Light, was published in 2006.  In addition, John Whalley - American Realist was published in 2001.  In 2008, he was featured on the television show Bill Green's Maine.

Art: "No Ends" Saturday, March 31st

no ends

03/28/12 - On Saturday, March 31st, Osiel Rojas proudly presents “No Ends” a one night only group show at No Romance 114 Bowery. The beautifully dark exhibition will feature nearly a dozen artists: Chris Clinton, Christian Brown, Donald Hearn, Haruto Imamura, Mint and Serf, Pablo Power, Rey Parla, Michael Betancourt, Reza Nader, Tim Knox, and Tomoko Sugimoto.

With works varying in media and subject matter, and artists of varying backgrounds, locations, and points of view, a very basic need to make ends meet has served as a jumping off point for each piece featured in the show. While some pieces directly capture the disparity, violence, and angst of these overloaded abstract times, others capture hybrid parallel emotions that may to a degree expose the artists’ process and intentions for a few hours. The ambiguity of this coming together is as fleeting as any New York City night, and is less about a cohesive theme and more about seizing the now.

“No Ends” demonstrates that in difficult times the possibilities of making and producing are the source of the artists’ inspirations, visions, and sustainability, as chaos seems to command the future and the present.

The opening reception and duration of the exhibition will be held from 7:00pm – 10:00pm on March 31, 2012 at No Romance, 114 Bowery New York, New York 10013.
